My Philosophy of Education
By: Jessica Corbin
I value the learning process and believe that formal education is the first way to spark a student’s interest in learning. My goal as an educator is to help students to appreciate learning and to obtain a love of learning. My philosophy of education goal is to create an environment that centers the lesson planson the child, incorporates all student diversities, have a good classroom management plan all while involving the parents.
I believe in the theory of Dewey that the lessons should be centered around the child. The lessons should be divided into categories that make it easier for the child to understand and relate to. My lessons are influenced and arranged by the student’s experiences. My teaching is centered on ideas and the teaching of how to help students learn to work with these ideals and create their own ideas. As a teacher it is my goal to show the students as much as possible how the things we learn in class relate to their actual lives.
When I create my lesson plans I taken into consideration the diversities of my classroom. At the beginning of the school year I plan to get to know each student and their by doing home visits. Doing so will help me to show respect for each of my students as well as have a better student teacher relationship with my class. My teaching does not focus on singling students out but finding ways to bring the classroom closer together. It is my goal to learn about the cultural diversities that affect the area I teach in and adjust my teaching accordingly. The diversities that affect the students can have a huge affect on their learning capabilities. It is my goal to address the students individually and help them to learn and grow.
My classroom management plan is focused on choices. During the first week of school I will ask that the students help me create the classroom rules. During this time I will let the students know that their behavior and consequences are based on the choices they individually make. If they choose to make a bad choice no one else is to blame but themselves and they will face the consequences for their actions. Some of the rules would include to show respect for yourself and others and to stay in your assigned seat unless you have permission to move. The first consequence for not following the rules is a warning. After the first warning the student loses points on their weekly behavior chart. This chart includes three strikes and if the student loses all three for the week a letter goes home to their parents. Allowing the students to help create the rules will teach them to have respect for the rules, each other and the teacher.
It is my goal as a teacher to involve the Parents in their child’s education. To keep the parent involved in the education of their children I will send home a weekly letter to the parents about their child’s behavior as well as the new lessons to be studied the following week and the opportunities for the parents to help. I plan to do weekly phone calls to the parents for both good and bad student behavior. I will alsoemail parents weekly about what lessons will be covered the following week as well as opportunities for parents to be involved in our in class activities.
I plan to fully involve my students in the education process as much as possible. My idea of a good teacher is one that makes the lessons interesting to the students and relatable to the very diverseclassroom. I believe that there are no good or bad students but students sometimes make bad choices. Parent involvement is essential to my classroom being successful, otherwise my teaching never fully reach each student. My goal in becoming an elementary education teacher is to instill in children at an early age an appreciation for learning.
